Introducing the BAS Neo: Precision Active Air Sampling for Modern Cleanroom Monitoring Programs

Publish Time: 2026-07-01     Origin: Site

Active air sampling is the primary method for viable microbiological monitoring in pharmaceutical cleanrooms and other controlled environments. The principle is straightforward: air is drawn through a perforated sampling head at a controlled rate, and airborne particles such as bacteria, mold spores, and other viable microorganisms, are impacted directly onto an agar contact plate. After incubation and analysis, the result is a quantitative CFU count tied to a specific air volume, location, and time point. That data forms the basis for a cleanroom's contamination trending, deviation investigations, and regulatory submissions.

Unlike passive methods such as settle plates, which capture whatever happens to sediment during an exposure window, active air sampling is volume-controlled and reproducible. It is also a regulatory expectation: EU GMP Annex 1, ISO 14698-1/-2, and EN 17141:2020 all define requirements for how viable air monitoring is performed and for the performance characteristics of the instruments used.

The BAS Neo is MicronView's newest BioAerosol Sampler, designed for teams who need compliant, capable active air sampling with a modern software platform and a versatile hardware configuration.

The Technology: Why the Andersen Impact Principle Works

Every MicronView BAS instruments is built around the Andersen impact sampling principle. Air is drawn through a perforated sampling head at a controlled velocity, and particles in the airstream are impacted directly onto a contact plate. The physics favor collection of biologically relevant particle sizes: particles with enough inertia deposit onto the agar and smaller, mostly non-biological particles tend to follow the airstream around the plate.

For the BAS Neo, the validated performance profile includes:

- Impact velocity of ~21 m/s, driving effective microbial collection across the relevant size range

- D50 < 0.9 μm: 50% collection efficiency at sub-micron particle sizes, validated across all flow rates

- Biological recovery validated across multiple test organisms and flow conditions, consistent with ISO 14698 and EN 17141 requirements

- Flow accuracy of ±2.5% at 100 L/min and ±3% at 200 L/min, maintained by a built-in differential pressure sensor

The BAS Product Line: Finding Your Fit

The BAS Neo is part of a broader portfolio designed to cover different environments, operational requirements, and monitoring strategies:

BAS Neo (C320 Series): Portable, battery-powered, touchscreen-driven. Designed for routine monitoring programs that need modern compliance features at an accessible price point.

BAS Standard (C130 / C230 Series): The established workhorse. Supports a variety of flow rates, includes compressed gas sampling capability, and carries a large data storage footprint. Available in two ergonomic configurations.

BAS Pro (C2121): The flagship for high-risk environments. Stainless steel construction and built-in HEPA exhaust filtration are standard, designed for sterile manufacturing and advanced contamination control programs.

Remote BAS (C5301 Series): Fixed installation inside isolators and critical zones. Operates on external air supply or integrated blower, integrates with EMC software, and eliminates the need for personnel access during sampling.

Instrument selection ultimately depends on the environment, the grade of the space being monitored, and the specific performance requirements of the program.

What the BAS Neo Brings to the Table

The Neo runs on a 10.8V, 6800mAh rechargeable lithium battery, providing up to 7 hours of continuous operation at 100 L/min or 2.5 hours at 200 L/min. For most monitoring shifts, a single charge covers the full day.

The 5-inch capacitive touchscreen is organized around three functional areas:

Sampling: Configure flow rate, volume, delay, interval, and cycle count. Continuous and cyclical modes are both supported, with LED lighting and audible alarms for real-time feedback.

Data: 20,000 stored records with quick lookup and one-click export and print.

Settings: Multi-level user access management with customizable permissions, plus sampling plan programming across up to 20,000 groups, 20,000 rooms, and 500 locations per room.

The instrument communicates via USB and WiFi, and connects to MicronView's Airborne Particle Counter (APC) and BioAerosol Monitoring System (BAMS) for synchronized viable and non-viable data collection at the same time and location.

Three Models, One Platform

The BAS Neo comes in three configurations depending on your environment's requirements:

C320: The core model. Full flow control (100/200 LPM via interchangeable heads), touchscreen programming, remote sampling up to 8 m, anodized aluminum construction. Battery life ≥ 7 hrs at 100 LPM.

C320F: Adds a built-in HEPA exhaust filter (>99.999% at 0.3 μm), required in Grade A/B environments and isolators where instrument exhaust cannot recirculate into the sampled space. Battery life ≥ 6.5 hrs at 100 LPM.

C320FNS: All C320F features plus NFC capability and an integrated barcode/QR code scanner. Sample records can be initiated by scanning a labeled contact plate, and NFC tags populate location data automatically, reducing manual transcription and the associated deviation risk.

All three are also available in Magnetic Seal variants (.M models) for easier, more consistent plate seating.

Beyond Standard Sampling: Isokinetic, Remote, and Compressed Gas

The BAS Neo also supports several sampling configurations beyond standard ambient air collection:

Isokinetic sampling. In unidirectional airflow zones such as Grade A, the Neo's inlet velocity is designed to match the ambient laminar flow at approximately 0.4 m/s. Non-isokinetic sampling introduces a systematic bias, over- or under-representing particles depending on whether the inlet velocity is mismatched with the airstream. Isokinetic operation eliminates that source of error.

Remote sampling. The Neo supports a detachable remote sampling head up to 8 meters away, for both vertical and horizontal flow configurations. The instrument body remains outside the isolator or laminar flow workbench while the sampling head is positioned in the critical zone, reducing personnel presence and contamination risk in restricted environments.

Compressed gas sampling. Compatible with MicronView's High-Pressure Diffuser (HPD) accessory, which decompresses pressurized gas streams, including nitrogen, compressed air, argon, and CO2, to atmospheric pressure before sampling. This allows viable monitoring of gas supply systems that cannot be sampled using standard ambient air methods.

Where the BAS Neo Fits

The BAS Neo is well-suited to routine cleanroom monitoring programs where portability, battery independence, and modern data management are the primary operational requirements. It delivers the flow accuracy, collection efficiency, and documentation needed under Annex 1, ISO 14698, and EN 17141, in a package that moves between rooms and runs a full shift without a power outlet.

For teams evaluating the full BAS line: continuous fixed-point monitoring inside an isolator is the domain of the Remote BAS. Programs requiring 28.3 LPM sampling heads are better served by the BAS Standard. Sterile manufacturing environments where stainless steel construction and HEPA exhaust are standard requirements point toward the BAS Pro.

For GMP cleanroom monitoring that is portable, battery-powered, software-driven, and compliance-ready, the BAS Neo is a strong and practical choice.
